Psychology professionals (Psychologists, Registered Counsellors, Psychometrists) see clients for psychological assessment, psychotherapy and counselling. They work with adults, children, couples, families, organisations and groups. 

Psychologists

A psychologist gathers information about people through interviews, psychological tests, psychotherapy and counseling in order to be able to understand, explain and predict human actions as well as to assist, help and intervene where required.  

A psychologist may help individuals to deal with the problems of daily living, provide psychotherapy or conduct behaviour modification programmes in mental clinics and hospitals. 

There are five categories of psychologists in South Africa:

Clinical Psychologist: assess, diagnose, and intervene in order to alleviate or contain relatively serious forms of psychological distress and psychopathology. Read more 

Counselling Psychologist: assist relatively well-adjusted people in dealing with normal problems of life concerning all stages and aspects of a person's existence in order to facilitate desirable psychological adjustment, growth and maturity. Read more

Educational Psychologist: assess, diagnose and intervene in order to facilitate the psychological adjustment and development of children and adolescents within the contexts of family, school, social or peer groups and communities. Read more

Industrial Psychologist: apply the principles of psychology to issues related to the work situation of relatively well-adjusted adults in order to optimize individual, group and organizational well-being and effectiveness. Read more

Research Psychologist: address any of the above fields, not necessarily to render services to the public but to apply research methods and techniques in order to contribute to the knowledge base of that particular field. 


Registered Counsellor

Registered Counsellors do assessment of psychological functions and offer counselling in one or two defined areas of practice e.g. trauma, school, family, HIV/Aids, etc. Read more
