You can study psychology at all universities in South Africa (not University of Technologies). There is a wide range of graduate psychology courses available. It is however important to ensure that your graduate course will gain you entry into postgraduate courses in order to gain registration as either a Psychologist, Registered Counsellor or Psychometrist.

More specifically ...

You will normally study a degree (BA, BSc, BEd, BSocSci, etc.) with psychology as a major. The degree you choose will depend on your area of interest and your university of choice. The next step is to follow an honnours degree called the BPsych (or equivalent). Most universities have selection processes for entry into the BPsych. With this degree you can apply to register with the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of SA) as a Registered Counsellor or Psychometrist. It is important to contact your University of choice to enquire whether the honnours you wish to follow will allow you registration as a Registered Counsellor or Psychometrist.

Take note: You will have to write the Board's exam, and pass it, before being allowed to register.

To become a psychologist you have to apply for an accredited Masters degree after completing your Honnours degree in Psychology. All universities have a strict selection process for entry into such Masters degrees. After completing your Masters degree you can apply for registration with the HPCSA as a Clinical, Counselling, Educational or Industrial Psychologist.

Take note: You will have to write the Board's exam, and pass it, before being allowed to register.

Students finishing a Masters in Clinical Psychology are also required by law to do one year's community service before applying for registration as Clinical Psychologist.
